Historical facts:
1
In 1864, the railroad line from Altenbeken to Höxter via Ottbergen was put into operation. However, a stopping point in Ottbergen was not initially planned, as only a few people lived in the agricultural village. When the Sollingbahn from Ottbergen to Northeim came into operation four years later, the village did get a station with a small locomotive station. Due to the growing freight traffic between the industrial centers of central Germany in the east and the Ruhr area in the west, more and more inhabitants in the region found employment with the railroad and with the stationing of up to 40 steam locomotives of the legendary class 44 - designed for freight traffic on low mountain routes - Ottbergen became very important nationwide from 1937 to 1976. The number of inhabitants in the village grew steadily and rose to around 2,500 by the Second World War, so that the church and school also had to be extended.
With the division of Germany, the flow of goods shifted from east-west to north-south. Ottberg locomotive drivers and stokers were on the move with their heavy engines between Braunschweig/Herzberg (Harz) and Hamm (Westphalia) as well as Hanover and Kassel. In order to keep their jobs, they refused no service. The 15-stall roundhouse still bears witness to this time. However, with the steady decline in rail freight traffic, numerous buildings and track systems had to be dismantled and the large roundhouse now only serves as a warehouse.
Ottbergen is still of regional importance for passenger transport. Since 2003, the NordWestBahn has been running modern Talent railcars from Paderborn to Holzminden every hour and since 2014 also from Ottbergen to Göttingen. In 2015, the station was made barrier-free as part of a modernization offensive by Deutsche Bahn. Thanks to a so-called winging concept, it is no longer necessary to change trains on the Paderborn - Göttingen route and in the opposite direction, as the multiple units are separated or coupled together in Ottbergen.
Since 2009, the station initiative of the Kulturgemeinschaft Ottbergen e.V. has been looking after the station on a voluntary basis as the town's calling card. The station building was rented, restored and converted into a village development museum and meeting center.
