Throughout his life, Jacob Pins explored the portrait of people in drawings, woodcuts and paintings. By looking in the mirror and at the faces of others, the artist studied the personality, disposition and posture of his subject. However, it was not only the individualized portrait that was of interest; Pins also trained himself in the depiction of typical facial expressions and deceptive masquerades. In Jacob Pins' work, the pictorial motif of the face is geared towards gaining knowledge and tells us about people as individuals, as types or as part of the crowd.
