The parish church of St Peter was founded around the year 1000 or shortly afterwards on the western edge of the market town of Höxter and was only incorporated into the old town when the town wall was built from 1152.
After the destruction of the town of Corvey in 1265, the Niggenkerken monastery was moved from Corvey to St Peter's Church. Its dean, later the town or parish dean, led the Catholic parish clergy in Höxter and the "Corveyer Land".
Under Napoleonic rule, St Peter's Church was demolished in 1810/11 and a central town school was built in its place. Today, the Höxter town council building stands on the site. The special window cut-outs on the building are intended to reflect the former location of St Peter's Church.
