Where only the two stone pillars can be seen today, there used to be a city gate through which merchants and travellers on Bremer Straße entered the city.
The gate got its name from the Romanesque Nicolai Church, whose nave was directly adjacent and whose tower also formed the city gate. The church was moved to Marktstraße in the 18th century.
